THE 28 PERCENT WE ARE ALWAYS WORRIED ABOUT

The ones who were bushie diehards, the teas, the other know nothings.

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'" - Isaac Asimov

MORE REASONED AND....WELL READ IT

Gail Collins does her usual good job of evisceration without using the words fuck, asshole or dick. But she does as good or better than I did.

Goodbye to a Guy Named Joe

I like the part where we move to another line so we don't have to talk to him.

You know, all this fun is premature. The bastard has two more years to go.

RUN FOR YOUR LIFE

Roger Ebert

The target thing is gone too. But it is so viral that it doesn't matter.

ANONYMITY

Here is a Republican who says that the rhetoric needs to be cooled down and, because he doesn't want to be attacked, says so anonymously. Double Message ALERT!!!

"There is a Need for Some Reflection

Really?

The same anonymous Senator points out that the heated rhetoric that preceded Oklahoma City is now routinely accepted and now there is a whole new level.

Not a very optimistic observation. Anonymous. Jeez. The fear is palpable for these guys. They have to kow tow to the rabid mob.

Of course he recites the usual line that the vast majority of tea baggers are reasonable people looking for the same thing we all are.

Sure. That's why they are tea baggers.

Sure.

With a lot of concealed weapons.

I know that my few friends (that is plural), who dip the bag, aren't carrying guns and, while perhaps not reasonable, are at least safe to talk to most of the time.

The one here has the conspiracy theories. It used to be black helicopters. Now it is, quite openly, the black president.

And so on.

I have been trying not to write about this because it certainly pisses off the tea partiers.

Actually, I haven't heard from either one of the three for quite some time. Maybe I am totally post pissed.

HATE SPEECH

The long expected result of all the hate spewed out, the animus, the sheer ignorance and voluntary know nothingness reaped its first harvest yesterday. Well, not the first. But the most serious and dramatic.

Rush, Glen, Sarah and the rest of the demagogues will have all kinds of diversionary comments today. But we know where this starts.

And here is where it ends.

Bloodshed Puts New Focus on Vitriol in Politics

Repercussions, indeed.

Wierd guys in patriot hats, the "don't tread on me" crowd, the lie spreaders about our President, the crazy shit spewed out by the Bachmans, the De Mints and the others. It all ends up here.

Talk about patriotism.

The thing is that when these guys talk it is either for money or power. They don't care that at the other end of the pipe there are truly crazy, violent people who are ready to take up the cause.

Did I mention that Arizona is a gun toter's paradise?

Here we have it. The stew we all said was brewing is now being served up.

I was not suprised at these weasel words:

Tea Party activists also condemned the shooting. Judson Phillips, the founder of Tea Party Nation, noted on his Web site that Ms. Giffords is “a liberal,” but added, “that does not matter now. No one should be a victim of violence because of their political beliefs.”
Labels: "a liberal". Whew. Pretty bad but don't shoot them.

And so it goes.

REAL WORLD

With the "flat earth society" headed towards Washington D.C., It is worth looking at some real life just a few miles from their new doorstep.

Many Norfolk residents hope their problems will serve as a warning.

“We are the front lines of climate change,” said Jim Schultz, a science and technology writer who lives on Richmond Crescent near Ms. Peck. “No one who has a house here is a skeptic.”

Front-Line City in Virginia Tackles Rise in Sea

Meanwhile, the GOPs fiddle while Rome floods.

Rep. Joe Barton (TX), that intellectual giant who chided the government for blaming BP, says that his god made the world and will protect it for man's enjoyment. Nothing to worry about here. Either his god or he is an idiot.

Another GOoPer says that CO2 isn't a poison gas because it is in the air we breathe in and out. Put him in one of those humane slaughter tanks with all CO2 and see how he makes out with the good air.

These bastards are not all dimwits. Some are wily.

They are all beholden to the energy interests who will fight this thing down to the last gasp. Theirs and ours.

The question is when we get to the tipping point.

Norfolk is tipping.

Some of this cannot be saved even now. It is bad money after good. The most valuable real estate becomes worthless.

Soon, enough will be losing by this that there will be a huge outcry. Can it be soon enough?

It is too bad that we have to depend on economic necessity to dictate what should be thoughtful, science based decisions.

Right now, I would put my money on the energy guys and advise the real estate interests, mostly little guys, to move back from the edge.

LOPSIDED

This from Kevin Drum today. Actually, Thoreau, another blogger.

The Assymetry of Incompetence

This is about how companies or governments that we deal with make mistakes for which we are always responsible.

A billing error costs us a fee or something like that.

With me, currently, it is that I am getting the run-around from the IRS. Their first assumption is that I do not deserve an adjustment on my taxes and, not only that, I probably owe them something. So they send me a bill which is not only redundant but shifts the blame completely. Actually, I am not interested in the blame as much as the money but, hell, if they are looking for an argument then I am the man for it.

I have the documents that they do not want to read or understand and they are IRS docs and one day there will be a reckoning. But there will be no apology. Which is OK. Just send the check.

I also was just in possession of a letter from our tax assessor telling me that a form which they had sent and was redundant (I had filled the same form out at the closing and have the copy) and that they would charge me a $100 fee if I didn't submit it (fucking) now.

Well, why go on? We all have such examples.

Just complaining here. Nothing going on folks. Just the regular thing. Break it up and move on.

So, I say that we should be able to put large companies on hold when they want something, send them through phone trees, and ask them to re-submit paperwork that we may or may not lose track of.

PATRIOTS

When Shameless Hucksters Lose What's Left of Their Decency

"If there's a contradiction or some sort of irony in cashing in over 9-11, that seems to have eluded the hosts. Palin wrote this week on her Facebook page: 'We can count on Glenn to make the night interesting and inspiring, and I can think of no better way to commemorate 9/11 than to gather with patriots who will 'never forget.' Visa and MasterCard accepted."

....Glenn Beck made $32 million last year and Sarah Palin made $12 million in a matter of months. The only difference is that this time it's 9/11."

Others on the far-right also hope to profit from the anniversary of 9/11. Disgraced lobbyist Ralph Reed will wrap up his "Faith and Freedom Conference and Strategy Briefing" on Saturday, and Newt Gingrich will unveil some new movie he put together on the same day.

Palin cross and flag

Actually, Sinclair Lewis wrote this in 1935 not 1835. It is from his work It Can't Happen Here.

Well, it could.

FOGGOT!

This is a very funny, yet sad, email exchange between a blogger and a very dumb homophobe.

I have read your website and it is obviously that your a foggot.

The exchanges are wonderful right down to the very end and there is an end to it.

David Thorne is a satirist and writer and, fortunately, lives in Australia or he might just have gotten the shit kicked out of him.

But probably not.

This kind of moron is all talk and bluster and no action. You would probably meet his type at a Sarah Palin get together.

The true fringe element of America.

I also think that this is all made up but it is funny anyway.

Thorne's whole web site is made up of exchanges like this.

I like the style of humor and the fantasy of having this kind of correspondence with people.

They are kind of a combination of practical joke and rant at the same time.

If they are real, he is in real danger of having a short life.

HE READ THE BLOG THIS MORNING

Obama Vows End to ‘Cozy’ Oversight of Oil Industry

From the NYT: President Obama angrily denounced the finger-pointing among the three companies involved in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill as a “ridiculous spectacle,” and vowed on Friday to end what he called the “cozy relationship” between the government and the oil industry that has existed for a decade or more.

In sharp remarks during an appearance in the Rose Garden, Mr. Obama announced a review of environmental safeguards for oil and gas exploration to prevent future spills. He said that he “will not tolerate any more finger-pointing or irresponsibility” from the industry or the government over who made the mess or how to fix it.

I bet this comes up a lot in the campaign.

He also said in NYC last night that the Republicans were like bad drivers who had gone off the road and, while we are getting things right, want to have the keys back.

Good.

He also revived the "get a mop" line.

HERE WE GO

Now we are going to find out how deep the negligence and political corruption of the Bush administration went. I bet this is just the beginning of a whole string of irreversible damage.

U.S. Said to Allow Drilling Without Needed Permits

This is one of the first agencies that the bushes manned with their political operatives who, in turn, reversed the recommendations of their own scientists to do the bidding of the oil industry.

We are going to find this shit smeared across the board.

OBSESSION

This is rather interesting and, if you are not the guy who is the target, somewhat amusing.

Confessions of a Non Serial Killer

This is a picture of Robert Graysmith who wrote about Zodiac and was played by Jake Gyllenhaal in the movie that didn't do that well but I liked. Another obsessor. But more benign.

It is amazing to me that there are stalkers and conspiracists and the like. People who have no life other than an obsession with some body or some thing.

I have just finished Ian McKewen's novel, Enduring Love in which a science writer becomes the victim of someone who suffers from de Clerambault's syndrome, a disorder that causes the sufferer to believe that someone else is in love with him or her. It causes some havoc in the hero's life.

It would appear that you don't have to really do anything to become the victim of one of these characters but then that is true of a lot of other things. You don't have to do anything, really, to be killed in an automobile accident or the victim of some other impersonal coincidence. (Is that redundant?)

I don't worry much about this kind of thing. A lot of fiction is made from stuff like this. Hitchcock made his fortune with the idea of the innocent victim. That was why it was so scary.

I was thinking about some times where I was obsessed. I had a "love" object once.

I know now that it came out of fear and insecurity of coming out. Also that he was cute. I must have been a pain in the ass but he took it well.

So maybe it is something to think about from the other side. One might become the chaser as easily as the chasee.

NAME NAMES!

Even I went to check who had voted against the 15% ceiling on credit cards.

Who Voted Against Capping Credit Card Interest Rates?

I couldn't believe it!

Actually, fair enough, it was a procedural vote and they will take it up again.

It is fucking insane to vote against this. But, there they are.

It has been said that the banks own Congress. May be.

But I would watch out for that "public interest arousal" the article is talking about.

I don't ever borrow or owe money on credit cards. Ever. Never. But I know people who are trapped in credit card purgatory and they cannot get out. It is shameful.

I bet there will be a retake on this. Watch. Obama is already urging them on. Believe me, he knows that the pitchforks are out for these bastards and their cronies on Capitol Hill.

Watch.

THE LONG GOODBYE

It seems as if the bushie has been saying goodbye longer than he has been in office.

Well, weeks.

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out!

Here is Gail Collins with a great recap of this image polishing business we have had to witness.

He's Leaving. Really.

Read it. At least you will get a few laughs out of his sad spectacle.

I also realize in writing this that I will be retiring some "labels". Never to be used again. I hope.

See below.

CHENEY ON THE WAY OUT

This bulletin just in. It happened as Cheney was doing one more gloss on the torture policy and seething over the rumor that Obama would close Guantanamo.
