Gladiators

For those of us who have sat on the bench all our lives, this stuff is just a complete mystery.

Aaron Hernandez conviction: Gambling on risky players is an NFL reality

Football has always seemed brutal to me. Even when I tried to play touch as a kid. The hard tag. The grapple. The sudden fights that would flare up with kids who had a "hot temper".

Just a game? Not for these kids.

We did not have football at the tiny school I went to. MIT did not have football. I had one son who went out for it and got a shoulder injury. Maybe that was in the little league or whatever it was. I was happy it cut his career short.

I could never watch a game. But I have trouble with all the television sports. It is not in my nature to care about this activity.

I ran, I swam some, I have gone to the gym forever. But competitive sports filled me with performance anxiety. When I was a kid, gym class was a horror.

So I am not a player.

I have missed out on watching this crazy ass macho behavior up close.

So I suppose, as a bona fide sissy, I do not get to comment on something like this. But fuck that. This is just the point.

I realize that hundreds of jocks have had small and large careers without having this violent streak. OK. Gentlemen.

But it is really scary to me when grown men who are not jocks gather round and cheer on the gladiators as though they are in the pit themselves. It is just bad. Ugly.

Everyone who cheered for this guy is part of the guilt. Sorry. I cannot see it any other way.

BOWLED OVER

I cannot abide football. Can't stand it.

I get nuts over the stupid marketing and publicity.

I have rarely seen a player who goes much beyond thugness.

I believe that it is part of what we can regard "the wreckage of America", emblematic of how we have lost our way.

Violence, dimwittery and huge outlays of capital to perpetuate a gladiator image.

OK.

That feels better. Got it off my chest.

But now there is an alternative. It will start at the same time. A half hour from now.

Are You Ready For the Sporting Event of the Year?

The Puppy Bowl!

There is even a half time show with kittens. Some sideline goofiness by hedgehogs.

But the heart of the show is the antics of puppies. Adorable ones. Are there any other kind?

And there is a good cause here. Not the big expensive ads everyone waits for but the promotion of puppy adoption. A big deal in the humane world.

THUG LIFE

Here. This is the article that I read about the Bear who had too many guns.

Tankful of Excuses

The thing is that it is not remarkable.

He is just one in a series.

SUPER BLOW

The world will stop today as two teams meet and pummel the shit out of each other to move an obloid inflated ball to one end or another of a field.

They will play according to a mess of rules which I do not comprehend.

They will celebrate violence.

They will triumph in their egos as they dance in the touchdown zone and act like fucking idiots.

There will be ads.

The ads are part of what the world stopped to see.

And so on.

Horseshit.

I will not be watching.

We do not even have teevee hooked up.

No internet peeks either.

There is a new wrinkle this year though.

The true criminal element of the player roster is higher than ever. There is this guy who has all kinds of weapons charges and so on? I was too bored to even read the article in the sports? section.

This big criminally minded moron is considered a star and role model for young black men.

No wonder young black men are in so much jeopardy right now.

Don't get me started.

Oh.

I did get started.

I have to admit that there is a bright side. Two black coaches for the first time. See photo.

For those of you watching and 'enjoying' the 'fun' of this wonderful event, don't take my remarks personally.
