LIFE CYCLE
I never tried to bike in Boston except on the Esplanade. It was too intimidating.
And even the Esplanade, the long park along the Charles River, was frought. The sidewalks were shared with pedestrians who did not pay attention to the bike lane divisions and other bikes who didn't respect left and right side riding. All of it.
So. It seems things have changed.

I rode my bike once along the charles river. It was the worst bike ride of my life. There were 3 bike accidents, all close calls for me. I never did it again. I think I was riding from harvard square to your place in the south end.

This is the "bike czar" speaking. Cyclists already have a legitimate place to be. It is called the street. Bike lanes are nice, but they create the impression that they are the only place bikes should be. That is false. Under Massachusetts' bike law, bikes have the same rights AND responsibilities as cars. To accept less than the former is a capitulation. To assume less than the latter is irresponsible. People who would like to ride bikes need to learn the rules of the road, grow a pair, and get out there. That is the only way things will change for the better. But, at least they're trying. d.
