MAY NARD

When I wrote about Maynard Ferguson's death, I searched for a tape that I could link to but came up empty handed.

Now, Crooks and Liars (who has a great daily concert tape) has done for me what I could not do for myself.

Ferguson plays 'Round Midnight

Now you can hear what we can't hear anymore.

I had forgotten that he was Stan Kenton's lead trumpet.

Comments:
I believe he could play a high C. On a trumpet this is not a small feat. I know a young man who can and it is quite a to-do. Along with that he was a great trumpet player. I went to a music school and if anyone played high they were called a "Maynard want to be". It was a point of contention and envy.

So… don’t play just a high C as Maynard did. Play music as Maynard did.
