SURPRISE?
I am not surprised that Obama embraces 'faith based' charities.
Obama to expand Bush's faith based programs
This is, after all, how he worked his community organizing.
In his first book it is very clear that he found a powerful ally in the churches.
He is a christian, after all. That is the christian ethos when it is not perverted by the wing nuts.
What does surprise me is that I am OK with it.
Why shouldn't the churches be engaged? As he said "we need all hands on deck".
The problem with the bush programs is that they have been restricted to churches who have a right wing social agenda and required values tests. That will end.
Let's keep the churches busy and that way they will stay out of meddling in other people's affairs and mind to their own. They should have a full plate.
I am also for it because it is a canny step toward stealing the GOoPer's base which is already fractured and moving to Obama.
Perhaps denominations like the Episcopals, the non-fundamentalist Baptists and others will get engaged. That would be just like the old days when I was in activism.
Politically astute and not really a move to the center so much as a move to inclusiveness.
